Our new Lego Club for young people aged 5-14 launched on 1st May at our offices here at Nidderdale Plus in Pateley Bridge, and has gone from strength to strength.
The Club is the brainchild of 13 year-old Reuben Thompson, a student at Nidderdale High School. Reuben was inspired to set up the club having been brought up with Lego. He says: “I got my first set when I was 5 or 6 years old. My dad had been a big Lego fan. I like the fact that you can create whatever you want and can take it apart and put it back in lots of different ways. Lots of people who have gone on to become engineers have loved lego when they were a child. When I grow up, I want to do something creative, possibly construction, engineering or something similar.”
The club is held after school each Wednesday during school term timr and runs from 3.45pm-4.30pm. The Club is a self-guided activity, run by young people for young people. (Though children under 8 years old need to have an adult in attendance with them.)
Adults will be in attendance only—they will not be directing the activities. However, there will be at least one adult staff member on site who is fully DBS-checked. The club is being run in partnership between Nidderdale Plus and North Yorkshire County Council.
